Book of the month for January:
BABYWISE, by Gary Ezzo and Robert Bucknam
As you should know if you follow our blog, our second son Luke was born in December and we wanted him to be a good sleeper! Babywise was recommended to us by several people to help babies sleep well, and Alicia was reading The Undaunted which is like 1000 pages, so I read it first.
RECOMMENDATION: Must read for anyone who has (or is planning to have) kids.
Our son Luke was a good sleeper from the beginning, but then again, most babies are since they are so tired in the first few weeks. Luke is almost 9 weeks old and thanks to Babywise, is sleeping 10 hours at night. Our first son didn't sleep through the night until he was about 6 mos. old, and even since then he has had several stretches where he would wake up one to two times at night. I have to admit that some of the things the book asks you to do seemed counter-intuitive or weird, but if you stick to it you will see the results. We now have both boys sleeping through the night and are finally enjoying some decent sleep thanks to this book. That right there has made it worth reading.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Babywise introduces several different parenting styles/philosophies, and compares the benefits and drawbacks of each. It then recommends a combination style that pulls in the good points of each style introduced and helps walk you through how to implement the style with your child. It covers topics such as feeding sources (bottle vs. breast), feeding methods (on demand vs. on a schedule vs. flexible mix), treatment of the child (always cuddling vs. on their own vs. a good mix) and many more.
I wish I had read this book before our first son was born! I would definitely recommend reading the book with your spouse or at least having them read it before the child is born so that you're on the same page. If only one of you read's the book, you will have to a lot of explaining to your spouse so to catch them up or else they may unknowingly set your child back in the process of getting them to sleep well.
Enjoy reading if you haven't already!
